HEMP-LIME FIRE RATING

IN JANUARY 2023, PERENNIAL BUILDING ACHIEVED A 1-HR FIRE RATING FOR A HEMP-LIME WALL ASSEMBLY AND WILL NOW BE ABLE TO USE HEMP-LIME IN THEIR COMMECIAL DEVELOPMENT, THE FLORA.

For the building department to sign-off on using hemp-lime in a commercial building, we needed to provide evidence the hemp-lime wall assembly was fire rated for 1-hour. To do this, we constructed a mock-up wall using the most vulnerable wall assembly in our building: a 12” thick wall with exposed staggered blocking on both sides with a lime plaster finish.

We brought this hemp-lime wall mockup to an independent fire research center for testing and passed a research scale ASTM E119 fire rating test. These test results, along with a certification from a fire protection engineer, will satisfy the building department’s requirement for a 1-hr rated assembly.
